Zero sequence current detection: The working principle of RCT is similar to that of zero sequence current transformer, which is based on Kirchhoff's current law, i.e., the sum of currents flowing into a node at any moment in a closed circuit is equal to zero. Under normal conditions, the vector sum of the three-phase currents is zero, i.e. there is no residual current. However, when there is a leakage in the circuit, the vector sum of the three-phase currents is no longer zero, and the RCT is then able to detect this unbalanced residual current.

Signal conversion: The RCT converts the detected residual current signal into a measurable electrical signal (e.g. voltage signal), which is then passed to the protection device for processing.
